Peel away the age
Chemical peels are exactly what it sounds like, a chemical is used to peel away the skin removing the outer layers of the skin.
This freshens up the skin, can remove sunspots and other pigmentation, but it is more widely used to reduce fine wrinkles.
It is a treatment that has been around for decades and can help people who are looking to stop the ageing process.
What is a Chemical Peel?
The answer may seem simple, you put it on and it burns the skin off – does it not?? Well not quite, nothing is ever that simple.
1) Some provide a very gentle peeling effect, that may not even be noticeable as a peeling effect, except for a fine flaking. Some of the milder ones are incorporated in to cosmetics
2) Some chemicals work by burning the skin to a certain depth and then stopping automatically. These are often used in clinics for medical purposes. For example treating pigmentation or Acne
3) Some continue to burn the skin until stopped by the practitioner. These are used by more advanced practitioners to provide a deeper, effect.
What Does a Chemical Peel Do?
They range from peels designed to freshen the complexion, to those that remove significant pigmentation, right through to those perhaps applied under general anaesthetic because they burn the skin to a considerable depth until it bleeds, but they do flatten some of the worst scars.
How do they work?
Gentle Chemical Peels
We all know that most of the skin we see on each other is dead! The cell cycle lasts between 26-42 days.
As we age the cell cycle slows down and the dead cells that come to the surface (what we see) are therefore much older and perhaps a little lacklustre. The gentle chemical peels and certain techniques such as Medical Microdermabrasion cause minute injury to the skin thus speed up the cell cycle, resulting in the dead layer being composed of newer ‘fresher’ better looking cells.
In addition the injury to the skin encourages repair and the slight redness/ (inflammatory response) encourages the laying down of more collagen in the deeper layers of the skin, depending in the aggressiveness of the treatment. Multiple treatments every 2-4 weeks apart yield the best results and result in much improved skin texture, reduction in oily skin, reduction in flare ups of acne, reduced scarring, reduction in fine lines or open pores. We combine these treatments with Medical Microdermabrasion to get the best results.
Moderate Chemical Peels
Moderate Chemical Peels are often used to treat specific issues, such as pigmentation. They tend to cause damage to the dead skin layer and perhaps breech a little further down. They then stop working and as such cannot scar patients unless misused. Systems such as the ICP follow this methodology. They can effectively remove pigmentation in the superficial layers of the epidermis but not deeper.
Deep Chemical Peels
Deep chemical peels are now rarely used with the advent of reliable laser resurfacing technology. They continue to burn when applied until neutralised by the practitioner. They do give significant improvement to scarred skin, however there is a risk of scarring so they need to be used with care and not all of these peels are safe with all skin types.
