We all wrinkle, even a child of 11, when they smile will have wrinkles around the eyes. As we grow older and our skin becomes more damaged and stiff, the skin develops creases at the site where the wrinkles were. These creases can be unsightly as well as make us look older than we feel. Crows feet, forehead lines and frown lines. If you have these issues the most effective treatment is Botulinum Toxin, the most commonly used form is BOTOX®.

What is Botox®?

Botox® is a trade name of Botulinum toxin A. It is licensed by the Company Allergan. Over the years it has become synonymous with the act of freezing the muscles with an injection or having any cosmetic treatment. Much in the same way as we talk about hoovering up when we mean vacuum cleaning. This is unsurprising when you consider that injections with Botulinum toxin are the most common cosmetic procedure in the world.

Why Use Botox®? Why not a Dermal Filler?

The action of Botox® is to weaken muscles, therefore it reduces lines caused by these muscles such as crows feet, frown lines and forehead lines. Dermal fillers give support to the skin where it needs it but do not affect wrinkles caused by muscles.

Will I have some Expression when I have Botox®?

Yes you will! In the early days when Botox® was first used in the USA, it was used in high doses to completely obliterate wrinkles, gradually over a period of time, it became obvious that this was too much and that it gave a false ‘plastic’ look. In Europe Botox® treatment was more conservative and was used to create a more open expression which is pleasing on the eye. When we treat, we aim to make a gradual change that looks natural and DOES NOT in any way look unnatural. The trick is to leave those around you unaware of what has been done, just mystified as to your youthful appearance.

Will I have a surprised look?

No you will not! Please do not be at all concerned about this unless you are consulting someone who is not properly trained in the use of Botox® ! (There are plenty about).

Does Botox® Treatment Hurt?

No! Absolutely not. If it does you need to find a new practitioner as there is something seriously wrong!

How long has Botox® been used for wrinkles?

The effect of Botox® was first discovered in the early 1990’s by Drs Jean and Alistair Caruthers. Botox ® has now been used by millions of patients in over 78 countries throughout the world. The toxin itself has been used for 20 years or so medically. As stated above Botox® is the commonest performed cosmetic procedure in the world.

Is Botox® licensed?

Botox® has been licensed for many years for the treatment of Blepharospasm and also hyperhydrosis (very sweaty armpits). It is the standard treatment for this distressing condition, even within the NHS! Over the last few years, Botox® has been licensed for cosmetic use in the USA by the FDA (Food and Drugs Administration) after extensive clinical trials and also by the MHRA in the UK for cosmetic use.

What is Vistabel® or Botox Cosmetic®

In the USA it was renamed Botox cosmetic® and in the UK it has been renamed as Vistabel®. Both of these are exactly the same formulation as Botox ® but have had their names changed to differentiate them from the NHS product. Unfortunately though, everyone has heard of Botox ® and this has become a household name, such as with vacuum cleaners and Hoover (see above).

What can Botox® be used for?

Botox® is most commonly used for treating crows feet, frown lines and horizontal forehead creases. These are the basic treatments that are done. It is used by our advanced practitioners in Nottingham & London to do much, more. Our Nottingham and London Practitioners have attended the advanced courses, and can offer the more advanced treatments for those that are suitable, but crucially much more thorough assessment.

Will Botox® get rid of my creases?

Difficult! It does depend on how long you have had them and how deep they are. It is a common observation that small minor creases DO heal if the skin is held stable by use of Botulinum toxin for a number of months. Others become much better, whereas the more severe creases require more invasive methods depending on severity and where they are.

I am Pregnant – Can I have Botox®?

No doctor or nurse will inject pregnant women with Botox® – if you think you might be, please tell the doctor or nurse carrying out your treatment. Obviously the doses used are very small and one would not envisage ANY harm from inadvertent use of Botox ® in early pregnancy, however it is conventional not to go ahead with any treatment in this situation.
