Anti-Wrinkle Treatment

Wrinkle and Creases – What’s the Difference?

A wrinkle, (medically known as a RHYTID, why oh why do doctors have to use such difficult words) is a (usually undesirable) fold in the skin.  We think of wrinkles as being a temporary issue, perhaps caused by a smile or a frown, whereas a crease is one where the line is still visible when the face is relaxed.

One can imagine the crease on a freshly ironed pair of trousers, in some ways this is a good analogy for a crease in the skin.

Wrinkle Treatment Options

How do we get wrinkles?

Wrinkles and creases can form for many reasons:

Most common is the action of muscles, these are commonly seen in the forehead (frown lines, or the horizontal age lines) or around the eyes (crows feet). Repeated tight folding of the skin – just like repeatedly folding a piece of paper results in a crease that remains behind, even when the muscle is relaxed.

Loss of volume: for example loss of fat around the cheekbone area can cause wrinkles and creases to appear in the cheek area. Finally because of the loss of volume the skin that was covering the cheekbones drops forward and the lines from nose to the corners of the mouth begin to appear, the so called nasolabial folds.

Skin laxity – loss of skin tightness can cause the chin to droop, without being very fatty.

SMOKING appears to cause the skin to thin, especially around the eyes and it does begin to droop and wrinkle sooner than it should.

Excessive sun tanning again causes the skin to thin and develop an aged crepe appearance, because of the immense damage to the collagen and elastin in the dermis from UV light.

Gravity! (Apples fall from trees, so do jowls)

All of these different causes require different approaches, although to the untrained eye the initial defect may look similar.

For example for creases one has to treat the underlying cause, then support the crease with a filler of some sort. There are instances where if one deals with the underlying cause e.g. by stopping the patient frowning with MUSCLE RELAXING INJECTIONS, the crease can heal itself.

We can fill discrete lines with Juvederm, Teosyal or Restylane.

With droopy cheeks that have caused deep lines, we can lift and volumise the cheeks with Sculptra or for a more instant result with Radiesse or the much newer Voluma

Sometimes the skin is lined and creased all over with no specific feature to start with. In these situations treaments that are available for fine lines and wrinkles include CO2 laser resurfacing, Fraxel, chemical peels, medical microdermabrasion, muscle relaxing injections such as botox, dermal fillers, Non ablative skin rejuvenation and Restylane Vital.

Wrinkle reduction with Cosmetic laser surgery

Cosmetic Laser Surgery is not something that just the rich and elite can afford, it is something that is available to all.

Fraxel Resurfacing is available here at Zenith as well as the more aggressive CO2.

These are techniques which can be used to treat fine lines and wrinkles, they have become increasingly more advanced than they were a few years ago. The downtime is normally only a few days but results are far superior to other methods.

But there are also a number of non-surgical and non-invasive treatments available that could work wonders for an individual.

Wrinkle reducing Chemical peels

A variety of mild chemical peels are used to give a look of skin rejuvenation, presenting a fresher appearance and a healthy looking glow. The more powerful the peel the more it does such as taking away minor blemishes, pigmentation and wrinkle reduction.

Chemical peels can also be used in the treatment of acne scarring as well.

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is a technique that is very simple and can help give skin a younger look and feel smooth to the touch.

The treatment is also excellent for reducing or getting rid of blackheads or whitehead spots, fine lines and wrinkles, sun damaged skin, acne prone skin, superficial age spots, hyperpigmentation, oily skin and dry or patchy skin.

Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive treatment that uses no lasers or chemicals in the procedure.

Muscle relaxing injections

Muscle relaxing injections are a safe treaments can significantly help with wrinkle reduction in areas such as crow’s feet and forehead lines. Wrinkles are produced by muscle action that tends to leave crease in the skins, but muscle relaxing injections such as botox are used to weaken the muscle.

This in turn reduces the appearance of the wrinkles on the face and a single injection can last a number of months.

Skin rejuvenation

Skin rejuvenation can be used to help tackle a number of problem areas that people would like to see gone.

They include broken capillaries, fine wrinkles, Rosacea, spider viens, age spots, sun spots, large pores, freckles, flushing, pigmentation variances and improving facial toning.

It is normally performed on the face and neck where the best results are achieved, but can also be done on the chest, hands, arms and legs as well.
