Celebrities are happily embracing any technology or procedure that can make them look perfect every time without having to worry about the stubble that can so easily ruin a reputation.

Liposuction and tummy tucks improve self-esteem - study

The majority of patients who have had liposuction and/or a tummy tuck say their self-esteem and quality of life improved after the surgery, research carried out in America revealed.

Outcomes are especially good when patients undergo both procedures at the same time, although recovery times are longer and pain levels higher than for liposuction alone, according to a study published in the April issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the medical journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).

Patients who had liposuction needed an average of six days off work, compared to 16 for those who had abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) or a combination of the two. The liposuction-only patients also experienced less discomfort, reporting an average pain score of six out of 10, compared to 7.5 for those who had abdominoplasty.

However, the tummy tuck patients were happier with the results – nine out of 10 were satisfied, compared to eight out of 10 for liposuction. But when both procedures were carried out together, this went up to 99 per cent, with no increase in pain compared to abdominoplasty alone.

Overall, 86 per cent of patients reported an improved sense of self-esteem after surgery, while around 70 per cent said they had a better quality of life – more commonly after liposuction plus abdominoplasty.

Nicole Scherzinger shares thoughts on cosmetic surgery

Singer Nicole Scherzinger has said she has not had cosmetic surgery but would not rule out going under the knife in the future.

Speaking to the Mirror, the former Pussycat Doll shared her beauty secrets and admitted to having body hang-ups and parts that she would like to change.

“I don't like my thighs. Or the back of my legs. Or my chubby knees. I never have. I wear clothes that show my legs in pictures or videos but not often when I'm appearing live. I'd love a bit more definition," she said.

Asked how she felt about cosmetic surgery, the 33-year-old replied: “I haven’t had cosmetic surgery. But maybe I would, in time. I’m not against it, if you want to enhance something or make yourself feel a little bit more confident. Each to their own.”

Scherzinger continued: “First of all you have to accept yourself and love yourself from within. Everybody’s talking about this Botox. I’ve never had it, but one day, you never know.”

The pop star, who was photographed at the Malaysian Grand Prix at the weekend on the arm of her on/off boyfriend, Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton, also spoke of her hopes for the future. “I see myself married with two beautiful kids,” she said, adding: “But that’s definitely not for another ten years, it’s nowhere soon!”

The company said late-stage trials carried out in the US showed that Botox worked better than a placebo as a treatment for an overactive bladder. The findings come after a UK study also showed Botox could be an effective treatment for urinary incontinence, with four out of 10 patients who received a jab reporting they became continent again after six weeks.

Based on the results, Allergan has applied for approval to market Botox in the US and the European Union for patients who are not being helped by anticholinergic drugs, which are typically used to treat urinary incontinence. Botox has long been approved in the US and EU for smoothing wrinkles, and for treating muscle spasms and eyelid twitching.

Around 3.2 million American patients suffering from an overactive bladder are taking anticholinergics, but more than half eventually stop taking the drugs because they are not effective enough or because of their side effects, Allergan said. Analysts estimate the use of Botox to treat more severe bladder problems could generate around $400 million (£252 million) a year for the firm.

Susan Sarandon admits to having liposuction

Actress Susan Sarandon has revealed her secrets for staying sexy at 65 – including having liposuction on her face.

In an interview with People magazine, the Hollywood star explained she had the procedure in a bid to remove fat pockets from her face. "I've had some lipo under my chin and under my eyes," she said.

Sarandon also hinted that she would consider having further cosmetic work done such as Botox injections – as long as the results were subtle.

"I have these two huge frown lines here (on my forehead),” she said. “But if you can't move your face or you're unrecognisable, I don't see how that's a productive enhancement. You don't want to look like a female impersonation of yourself."

Sarandon, who found fame in films including Dead Man Walking and Thelma and Louise, told the magazine that older actresses are often overlooked for the better roles in Hollywood.

"It's true there aren't that many good parts. I've had my disappointments. It's hard to be in this business and not be an alcoholic or a drug addict or bitter as an older woman," she said.

Courteney Cox: 'I could use some Botox right now'

Courteney Cox has said that growing old gracefully in Hollywood is hard, and she is open to trying any anti-ageing procedure that will keep her “feeling good”.

The 47-year-old Cougar Town actress revealed she uses Botox to improve her appearance in front of the camera, and has no doubts about the effectiveness of the anti-wrinkle jabs.

In an interview with The Telegraph, Cox said, "I am an absolute guinea pig for anything that will keep me feeling good. If someone says, 'You should try apple stem cells,' guess who'll be putting them on her face the next day.

"Look, I'm close to 50. Getting older isn't easy for anybody. Especially here in Los Angeles. So let's be clear: looking youthful is something I do a lot of research on. Man, I could use some Botox right now."

The former Friends star also shared how she stays looking youthful, revealing she stays out of the sun, gets a good night’s sleep, exercises to stay in shape and avoids carbohydrates.

“I’m kind of lucky in that I can eat more than most girls, but I try to stay on a low-carb diet. I eat a lot of steak,” she said.

Younger women opting for facelifts

Demand for surgical facelifts is growing, with women going under the knife at a younger age than ever before, according to a leading cosmetic surgeon.

Facelifts performed by members of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons were up by 4.7 per cent to 4,700 in 2011. But surgeons say this figure is just the tip of the iceberg, and an increasing number of women in their 40s are now asking for the nip and tuck operation.

Jag Chana, a member of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, told the Daily Mail he has seen demand rise by 225 per cent in two years. He believes the popularity of non-surgical procedures such as Botox and dermal fillers among younger women has made it easier for them to contemplate a facelift.

"This generation was the first to discover injectables. They used them during their 30s and early 40s, but they got fed up with going back for top-ups and were increasingly worried about looking artificial," he said.

"They also discovered the limits of what they could do. No injections can deal with jowls and a sagging neck. Facelifts offer a more permanent solution and, nowadays, a natural look."
