Why does our skin lose elasticity and start to sag?

Our skin is supported by a structure of collagen and elastin fibers in the dermis in a network of skin cells, fibers and blood capillaries. Below in the hypo-dermis or subcutaneous tissue there is supporting fat tissue with strong and elastic collagen tissue, other supporting skin cells and the blood and circulatory system. As we age the collagen and elastin fibers break down and become less structured and elastic and our repair and replacement of these becomes less efficient. External factors such as UV radiation, lifestyle and environmental pollutants can make this worse. This results in wrinkles and the the changes in the deeper tissues lead to sagging of the skin often know as skin laxity. Changes in and around fat cells in the hypodermis where the supporting collagen fibers and circulatory system becomes impaired can lead to them becoming less compact and structured causing a raised and dimpled appearance of the skin in body areas, a problem known as cellulite.

What is skin tightening with radio-frequency?

Radio-frequency a form of electro-magnetic energy, it is used in medical aesthetic procedures to transmit energy to the deep dermal and hypo-dermal areas of the skin, areas where other medical laser and light devices can not penetrate. If the radio-frequency is focused and sufficient in these areas it will cause the collagen to heat to a level where it will contract and start to tighten and lift the skin. This immediate effect is then followed by the production of new collagen, which re-models and tightens naturally over time, producing an underlying natural tightening, lifting and shaping of the skin.

Are all radio-frequency devices the same?

No; medical aesthetic practitioners and clinics tend to use higher specification and energy level devices than are used in the beauty sector and the machines they use are normally approved as medical devices under the European medical device directive and approved in the USA by the FDA. Also until now the technologies available to medical aesthetic practitioners had limitations; the energy and heat could be delivered too superficially in the skin limiting the efficacy and predictability of outcomes alternatively to achieve the deeper collagen heating desired high level and relatively uncontrolled energy could cause excessive heating particularly in the more superficial levels of the skin, causing pain, increasing the safety risks and again compromising the predictability of results.
