Cutting-edge techniques transforming cosmetic surgery

Cosmetic surgery is becoming less and less invasive as patients increasingly take advantage of new technologies instead of going under the knife.

With these new treatments and procedures there are shorter and fewer incisions, meaning patients spend less time under anaesthetic and recovering in hospital, according to a report from the US by ABC News.

Among the new techniques on offer are laser treatments and devices that use ultrasound to melt away fat and tighten skin, such as Bodytite and Liposonix.

Dermatologist Dr Doris Day told ABC's 20/20 programme that non-surgical liposuction options are the latest development in resculpting the body.

“It's like liposuction, but it's a non-surgical approach. … It uses that high-density focus ultrasound to actually heat up and melt fat,” she said.

The same technology can be used for non-surgical facelifts. Dr Day said that the ultrasound “delivers heat very deep, that helps give a lift”.

The doctor told Barbara Walters on ABC that she does not "believe in ageing gracefully", adding: "I think you have to fight it every step of the way."

Dr Day says the latest advancements give dermatologists and surgeons a range of tools that provide more flexibility so they can find the best approach for each patient.

Zenith performs BodyTite Lipo under hypnosis

Ground Breaking Treatment at Zenith.

LH was showing some anxiety at the prospect of undergoing the bodytite procedure, but was not suitable for conventional general anaesthesia.

Therefore used simple techniques were used to bring on a deep state of relaxation. The patient was able to communicate fully but in complete comfort with a sense of wellbeing.

When woken post procedure she stated that she felt quite relaxed and that it had been “Quite good!” despite using minimal amounts of local anaesthetic and removing over 2Litres of fat.

Dr Maini comments “I believe this is the first time that a BodyTite treatment has been conducted under hypnosis, it may well be the first time any such lipo procedure has been conducted in this manner. I have used hypnosis for many years to treat anxiety symptoms and simple phobias, however this is the first time I have used this procedure to give analgesia. I am very impressed at how much easier it made the treatment.”

TOWIE's Lauren Goodger considers liposuction - friend claims

TOWIE star Lauren Goodger has reportedly been considering having liposuction after comfort-eating left her unhappy with her weight.

Goodger has been stuck in a "cycle" of binge eating and drinking since the break-up last year of her on-off ten-year relationship with fiancé Mark Wright, who also stars in ITV2's The Only Way Is Essex (TOWIE), a close friend told Closer Magazine.

In an interview soon after the split, Goodger claimed that before the relationship ended Wright had told her she needed to lose weight. The star also confided in fellow cast member Lauren Pope about her fears she had piled on the pounds following the acrimonious break-up.

The friend told the magazine that the 25-year-old was thinking about getting liposuction in a bid to shift excess body fat: “Lauren constantly criticises her body and is even talking about having liposuction on her thighs and tummy."

The source added: “Lauren’s self-esteem seems to be at an all-time low because she can’t control her junk food and booze binges. She sees them as her downfall. Lauren says she’s locked in a cycle – she’s miserable over Mark, which triggers her comfort-eating, then gets down as she can’t seem to shift the weight."

A new non-invasive alternative to liposuction that blasts fat cells using ultrasound has been approved by America’s health regulatory body.

Liposonix is designed to get rid of small but hard-to-shift areas of fat such as tummy flab and love handles without surgery. It works by delivering high frequency ultrasound deep into the fatty layer to melt away fat cells.

The treatment, which can be done in a lunch hour with minimal discomfort, was given the green light by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) last year. Beverly Hills plastic surgeon Dr Renato Calibri is among the first to offer the procedure. "It's a high energy beam that will go through the skin and target the fat cells and permanently destroy the fat cells," he explains in a video posted on ivillage.com.

Patient Kristen Chaney says she considered liposuction, but didn't want an invasive procedure. The 34-year-old mother hopes Liposonix will flatten her belly following a Caesarean section. "I have the little overlap and it drives me nuts," she says.

Liposonix is available in a handful of clinics in the UK. An alternative is Bodytite, a minimally invasive procedure carried out under local anaesthetic that uses ultrasound to melt away excess body fat. It also shrinks collagen fibres to tighten up loose skin.

X Factor's Kitty Brucknell hails liposuction

X Factor finalist and cosmetic surgery fan Kitty Brucknell spoke of her delight at the results of a £3,000 liposuction procedure.

The 27-year-old singer dropped more than a stone and two dress sizes after having six litres of fat removed from her bottom, thighs, stomach, hips, back and knees.

Posing naked for a photo shoot with Now Magazine, Brucknell exclaimed, “I embrace surgery!”, adding: “Lipo's the best thing I've ever done in my whole life. I needed it – I had huge hips."

Despite appearing on last year's X Factor in a variety of skimpy outfits, Brucknell said she is unhappy with her figure – apart from her legs. "I do a lot of walking and sit-ups," she explained.

She continued: “I hate my 34DD boobs, too, I want a reduction. They aren't attractive to me as I can't dance with them. I like the androgynous look. Annie Lennox is my body icon.”

The blonde singer started having Botox in 2009 soon after undergoing liposuction, and in an interview with Heat magazine last year, described the procedure as “a good thing”.

Brucknell was axed from the show on November 13 when judges voted her off following a sing-off with Misha Bryan.

Overweight doctors less likely to help patients lose weight

Overweight doctors less likely to help patients lose weight

Doctors who are overweight or obese are far less likely to encourage patients to lose weight than those who are a normal weight, a new study found.

While 30 per cent of doctors with a healthy BMI (body mass index) are likely to speak to their obese patients about weight loss, only 18 per cent of the overweight doctors would, according to the research, published in the journal Obesity.

Doctors are also more likely to diagnose patients as obese if they think their BMI is the same as or more than their own. This is a situation that GP Lady Arabella Onslow, who, at her heaviest weighed 22st, identifies with. When patients came to her for advice about weight loss she says they both found it difficult to ignore the fact that she was obese.

“I can see in hindsight that my idea of what constituted normal weight was massively skewed,” the 41-year-old told the Daily Mail. “For example, when I weighed 22st, if I saw a patient who weighed 18st I found myself thinking they weren’t that overweight – while, of course, they were.

“Luckily, however, my professionalism and training took over and I gave them the correct advice according to weight guidelines.”

Patients who are overweight may want to consider liposuction or body contouring treatments to help them regain confidence and health.

One of the latest body shaping crazes in the US is for women to have liposuction and other body contouring treatments carried out before their wedding day.

The TV show Bridalplasty follows several brides each week who feel they need a bit of ‘intervention’ to help them feel confident on their big day. Many of them will have lost a fair bit of weight and now have lumps, bumps and excess skin that they would like to tighten up or remove altogether.

Perhaps one of the most extreme cases covered on the show was that of Linsey Ray who spent $20,000 on transforming her figure after her boyfriend proposed. She had skin removed, as well as body contouring procedures such as a tummy tuck and breast lift.

Speaking to Good Morning America, she explained, “I know it sounds crazy but… it is the worst thing in the world to literally wear three tank tops to hold all your suction in, everything and so it's worth it for me.”

She added, "I'm happy with the results. I know I'll look great in my dress. I'm excited to try on dresses."

Katona reveals tummy tuck wish in Closer Magazine

Reality star Kerry Katona has taken to the pages of Closer Magazine to discuss her weight and has claimed she would have a tummy tuck if she could afford it.

Speaking candidly about her recent detox attempts and her weight loss down to 9 stone 4lbs, from 10 stone 4lbs in just a month, Katona also posed in a bikini to show off the fruits of her labour.

The reformed alcoholic and mother-of-four signed up to the GI Jane Bootcamp before Christmas and has successfully shed some stubborn pounds. She also managed to keep it off over Christmas. However, she said that she is still keen on the idea of having more cosmetic surgery after a successful bout of liposuction a few years back.

She told Closer: "After having four kids, I'm not confident about my belly. When Max was born in 2008, I was offered liposuction for a TV show – and I think I'd have it all if I could get it for free."

"In the past few weeks, my arms have become super toned. I feel like Arnold Schwarzenegger… but I still hate my stomach. If I could afford it, I'd have a tummy tuck."
