Dermal fillers that restore youthful volume to the face are becoming more popular as people look for innovative ways to combat the signs of ageing, according to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD).

"As much as lines and wrinkles make us look older, we're learning that volume loss is just as critical," said dermatologist Jenny Kim, associate professor of medicine at the University of California in Los Angeles. “Because of that, we’re looking at the ageing process a little differently now and understanding the importance of replacing volume loss in the face to restore the fullness of a more youthful appearance.”

While hyaluronic acid fillers and Botox remain the most widely used wrinkle treatments, demand for the newer volumising fillers, which focus on improving the overall fullness of the face, is rising fast. One product currently being trialled by the AAD, is calcium hydroxylapatite, which restores facial volume and promotes collagen production. The filler, also known as Radiesse, is thicker than the hyaluronic acid fillers currently available and the results last longer – up to a year in most cases.

However, the thickness of the formula may cause slightly more side effects than hyaluronic acid fillers. Dr Kim believes that further research into volumising fillers will help reduce adverse affects and achieve better results. She added: “Since each filler has unique advantages and disadvantages, it is important that patients discuss their expectations with their dermatologist to determine which procedure is best for them.”
