With David Beckham’s smooth torso appearing on billboards and Spanish football player Cesc Fabregas going public about having laser hair removal done, it is no wonder more men are following in the footsteps of celebrities and looking for ways to banish their chest hair.

While many use short-term solutions such as shaving and waxing, an increasing number of men are opting for permanent or semi-permanent hair removal methods. One clinic reported that demand for laser hair removal on the chest area was up 22 per cent this year.

The winter months are usually a popular time of year for laser hair removal because patients are advised to stay out of the sun before and after treatment, and often require a course of treatment over several months to achieve the best results. However, even when taking the time of year into account, clinics have been seeing a recent rise in interest in laser hair removal for chests.

But what do women prefer? According to Dr Nick Neave, a psychologist at Northumbria University, whether a woman likes a hairy chest may depend on her experiences growing up. “We know women are strongly influenced by the way their father looked,” he told the Daily Mail. “So if a woman’s first experience of a man is a father with a hairy chest, she may use that as a template.”
